It's not all that different. Both the traditional design and the new
one have the same "blazon", which is how heralic devices are formally
described. How a particular set of arms was drawn or depicted has
always had to do more with the individual artist. As long as the basic
elements are there, so that the arms are recognisable, then, heraldicly,
it's correct.
In this case, the APO arms are a blue field wiht a white diagonal stripe
from right to left (arms are described from the point of view of the
arms, not the person looking at them). On the stripe is a golden sword,
pointing to the lower left. In the lower right field is three golden
fleur-de-li, and in the uppoer left are thre gold torches. Superimposed
in the upper-right corner is a second coat of arms in miniature,
consisting of a gold field divided by a white cross On the gold field
are twelve red drops, divided evenly. Surmounting the arms is a helmet,
facemask open, with four rays shooting out of the top through four
stars. Below the arms is a motto scroll, reading "Alpha Phi Omega".
The arms are supported by two golden.... thingies. I never could
figure out what they are.
In proper heraldry, that description would be written in a formal
language, and it would be up to the individual who was tasked with
drawing it each time exactly how the fleur-de-lis, the torches, the
supporters, etc would be drawn.
The "new logo" has a blue field, a white stripe, fleur-de-lis and
torches in the right places, a sword, an estuchion of gold and white,
with red droplets, a helm above (closed-face, but I forget how important
that is), a motto below, stars above all, and as supporters, two
golden....thingies. Different thingies, but thingies non-the-less.
This is not the first re-interpretation of our arms that I've seen, and
the differences are, heraldically speaking, superficial.
