I wholeheartedly agree with the concept of respecting
other Brother's beliefs, speaking out for what we
believe and even speaking out about what makes us uncomfortable; HOWEVER =
I
don't believe that loyalty implies anything about keeping another from
feeling uncomfortable.
True to self implies that we should be comfortable
enough with our own beliefs that we don't have to bend
them for anybody, thus remaining true to our own
personality, character and goals in this life.
What the verse seems to imply, perhaps on a more
subtle level, is the need to agree to disagree. We can
be true to each Brother and be true to the community
of humanity, without sacrificing ourselves in the
process.
And I certainly don't believe that the system should
be changed because one person is uncomfortable. While
it is necessary for the majority to respect the one uncomfortable =
person, it
is just as necessary for the one who is uncomfortable to respect the
majority view. There is usually a bigger picture at work that just needs =
to
be discussed... the system may be changed over time, but it needs to be =
done
in an environment of respect for each side of comfort zone...
or -- as we learned from Star Trek -- "The needs of
the many outweight the needs of the few -- or the
one."
Loyalty goes both ways....
