i would just like to point out that we are not the
only organization that has "gender specifities" in
songs and terminology...
For example, my roommate is in Kappa Kappa Psi, the
marching band fraternity. It is coed. They are
brothers. I don't know specifics of songs and other
traditions that they have but they are all brothers.
This does not bother or offend her or any of the other
females in the organization.
Similarly, Tau Beta Sigma is the marching band
sorority...it is also coed. Yet it is a sorority,
they are all sisters. I have a male friend who is in
Tau Beta Sigma and I asked him if he was at all
offended by being refered to as a sister....he said
no, it's part of being in the organization and part of
its history...he is also a Marine...I think if any man
would be offended by being refered to as a sister, it
would be a Marine...however, that is not so...(I am
friends with several other males in the organization
who will tell you the same thing.)
These are both national organizations that have been
around since the early half of the 1900's and,
similarly to Alpha Phi Omega, were single-gender at
thier founding. (I believe they are still single
gender at some campuses and coed at others but they
are nationally coed.)
There are also many sororities that are referred to as
Fraternities in technical documents, rituals and other
occasions because the word "sorority" was developed
after thier founding. (don't quote me on this but I
belive Alpha Phi? may be one of them). I think
someone may have brought up that point at nationals.
Quick lesson in Linguistics..."Fraternity" is not
gender specific...it refers to a group of people who
share a common bond. and "Brother," to me, does not
imply being male, instead, it refers to members of the
"fraternity" who share this bond.
