Having lived on both sides of the country and advising a chapter on
each coast (Gamma Gamma - UC Berkeley & Alpha Delta Eta - SUNY Albany),
I can confirm that what Chris says is true. Rushes, pledging, and other
basic chapter operations are conceptually the same, with each chapter
adding their own unique aspects.
The difference is more of a cultural thing. Most chapters I came in
contact with on the west coast sang "true to" or some other variation.
It seemed to me that there is more of an emphasis on political
correctness throughout the west coast. West coast APO chapters do not
create this sort of environment; it is forced on them by cultural
beliefs on their respective campuses.
I'm not quite sure what the cause of this is... having lived in San
Francisco while advising UC Berkeley's chapter I saw that those areas
have been highly influenced by the counter-culture of the 60's. In the
time I spent there, it seemed like almost everyone I spoke to was an
activist for one cause or another. Street demonstrations were fairly
common; there was at least one every month, usually far more. Everyone
strives to be treated as equals, and since APO is an east coast
creation, it is subject to scrutiny in the west in regard to the gender
issue.
My observations in the San Francisco Bay area were only in a portion of
Section 4, Region X... but it could be a basis for understanding how
some chapters handle this issue.
