Several quick hits on the various convention topics being discussed...
1) PG's on the floor: Not to correct the esteemed Region III Director, but
there were * 5 * PG's seated on the floor (3 with 1 delegate, 2 with 2
delegates), placed right next to the 2 delegates from chapters which had voice
but no vote due to not being in good standing. Trust me...I helped with the
placard placing and probably spent more time on the floor than anyone except
Emily & Aaron (the chair & advisor to Floor Services)... P.S. Emily & her
co-chair Maria, did an AWESOME job chairing SAA/Floor Services, especially
when you consider they hadn't been to a convention before!
2) Subpoenas: again as someone who helped out quite a bit in tracking people
down (and for the last several conventions), I can only echo Mark Stratton's
comments regarding how time-consuming the subpoena process is. Matt Cross made
a good suggestion as far as checking outside the committee room for open
sign-ups (or even checking in with the committee to let them know of your
interest in testifying). Letting the committee and the SAA office know
where/when/how to find you also makes life MUCH easier. I can tell you that
there were probably several subpoenas that sat in the SAA office for hours (or
may never have been delivered) if we couldn't find the people. Often times,
when we finally did find people to deliver the subpoenas to, they had already
checked in themselves with the relevant committee or had been tracked down
outside of the subpoena process. I was disappointed this time not to see any
committees subpoena another committee for all their blue and yellow M&M's!
3) Legislation: I just want to commend Mark Stratton for his work coordinating
the legislative process, as things seemed to flow very smoothly. Rob Coop also
deserves kudos for his work as the Convention SAA.
4) Awards: I don't think I've seen mention of all the National DSK's presented.
Not only did Dave O'Leary (chair of the Scouting & Youth Services Committee)
receive one, but so did Jim Chandler (BSA's liaison to our Board) and Patrick
Burke (our past National Executive Director).
Judy Mitchell was also recognized for her 30 years of working for the
fraternity...no offense to Bob London, Patrick Burke, or any of the other
national office staff, but those of us who have worked closely with the office
can easily state with a clear conscience that Judy is the one person who makes
this fraternity's day-to-day operations run smoothly! Thanks Judy!!!
