Greetings all!! =20
As many of us prepare for travel to Nationals, there are some travel =
tips I'd like to
share with everyone. =20
--DRIVING TIPS--
First, for those driving, the Federal Highway Administration website has =
compiled a list of websites that have construction activity updates and =
other road conditions for all 50 states in the country. Visit and =
bookmark http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/trafficinfo/ for details!
For those driving through Region 3, printable directions from Region 3 =
to New Orleans are posted on the Region 3 website. =
http://www.serviceusa.org/region3/nationals/travel.html#driving =20
REMEMBER, if you are driving late at night and get tired, stop and get a =
hotel for the
night...Sleepy drivers are just as dangerous as drunk drivers!!!!
--FLYING TIPS---
For those who are flying and don't fly too often, there are many new =
security
measures in place at all airports across the country. A complete =
listing of the
new security measures can be found at http://www.TSAtraveltips.us I'm =
going to
highlight a few items plus give tips from my experiences flying over the =
last year
to make your travel easier.
Baggage: Most airlines will allow you to have one carry-on bag and one =
personal
item (purse, laptop, backpack, etc) to carrry on the plane. Check with =
each
specific airlines website for their specific requirements. The maximum =
number of
checked bags is 3 (any more than that and you get charged extra)
Check In: If your airport/airline has the self-check-in kiosks, I =
recommend using
those. Those lines are typically shorter. You can check bags using =
those kiosk,
so don't let that deter you. You will need a credit card which is used =
to verify
your identity.
Security Checkpoints & Screenings: The items that are permitted and =
prohibited are
listed here:=20
http://www.tsa.dot.gov/public/interweb/assetlibrary/Permitted_Prohibited.=
doc =20
Most toiletries and electronic devices are allowed in the carry-ons. =
The security
personnel may ask that you turn on your electronic device (phone, =
laptop, pda). =20
PLACE ALL UNDEVELOPED FILM AND CAMERAS WITH UNDEVELOPED FILM IN YOUR =
CARRY ON BAGS.
The new x-ray machines used in scanning checked baggage destroys =
undeveloped film
while the carry on screening does not. =20
http://www.tsa.dot.gov/public/display?theme=3D56
The steps for the passenger security screening can be found here
http://www.tsa.dot.gov/public/display?theme=3D52 =20
Here are some additional tips before going through the screening =
process:=20
-Have your boarding pass/e-ticket confirmation AND photo ID available =
for the
security screener to check. Many airports, such as Charlotte/Douglas =
Int'l, now
require you to have a boarding pass before entering the security line.
-Avoid wearing metallic objects on your body, such as belts, keys, =
change, watches,
jewelry, boots, underwire bra (don't laugh, the wire does set off the =
alarm) etc. =20
Many hiking boots have metal in the sole of the shoe that will set off =
the walk
through metal detector. I recommend wearing tennis shoes.=20
http://www.tsa.dot.gov/public/display?content=3D286
-When going through the checkpoint, remove your jacket and place it on =
the x-ray
conveyor belt or in one of the trays.
-BE PATIENT!! Dont get frustrated if you have to be wand searched or =
your bags
examined. This is part of the new security and it's really not that =
bad.=20
-You may be re-examined at your gate. Passengers are picked at random =
to have
their bags searched and to be wand searched. I've been on 21 flights =
this year. I
was gate searched at 2 of the first 3 and then was only searched once on =
the
remainder of my 18 flights. =20
If you have any specific questions, ask your airline or airport!
See you in New Orleans!!
