I have been trying to keep quiet from this one but I jsut have to speak up now. I know in my chapter, most of the history is not taught to the pledges. What is in the pledge manual should be taught, but there should be other resources of history that we all can have access to. I pledge back in FA of 1996. Most of my knowledge that I have from our beloved Fraternity has been learned since I have became a brother.
Yes, Hazing is against the rule. Yes, I agree with that. What I do not agree with is as to the scope that we consider hazing to be. If I see a pledge outside of my chapter meetings, and I ask them a question about the fraternity, or I ask them to recite the greek alphabet; that could be considered hazing. What I, as well as my chapter brothers, want to see is that a standerdized protocol that spells out what is and what is not hazing.
On the subject of the HBCs.....We as a fraternity can gain alot from them. I have brothers in my chapter that are brothers of a black social fraterity. They believe once you pledge and become initiated, you are in the fraternity for life. I have seen many brothers pass thru this chapter as well as others in the area that once they graduate or leave the college, they forget about the fraternity. We are a brotherhood of like minded people.
I personaly know if I called active undergrad borthers no matter what chapter, they would welcome me with open arms. But as for brothers that are alumni, dating back to the mid 70's; I have found very few that would even remember our letters once they saw them. For that point, I have worn my jersey to the malls and while traveling, and I have had countless number of brothers from HBCs (FL A&M is the main one) that still know everything and have even taught me a few things. That is how we can learn from the brothers at HBC and all Brothers for that matter.
On the issue of APhyQue's, it is not a race thing, persay. I believe it is a misconception. Most of the APhyQue's do not want to seperate from our fraterity. They want to beable to flurish as much as all of us co-ed chapters. If any brother whether be male or female ever sits down and talks with any of those brothers they will find out that. I know I have.
One more little tid bit. Did we as individual people join this organization to become brothers with a clear bond or did we want to be "members" in this organization. I believe that the legislation put up by the National Board is out of line for people in thier possition. If I wanted to be a memeber of something I would join the 4H club or somthing like that. I joined a BROTHERHOOD that is made up of males and females. I think that we as a fraternity are moving away from the vision of our founders.
