Heather, et al,

I have seen a number of fund-raisers in my time in APO, so I can probably
give you a few ideas. Zeta Epsilon chapter (Gustavus Adolphus College, St.
Peter, MN, where I originally pledged) did a lot of them. They included
selling Valentines, pumpkin grams, candy canes, or pretty much anything
that was small enough to fit into a PO box. The people could write a
little note on them, then they were delivered through the campus post
office (they were good about that). They could also be hand-delivered, but
that takes a LOT more work. They also have Flowers on Fridays that they do
periodically, but that one started after I graduated, so I don't know many
of the details.

Another idea that my current chapter (Zeta Chapter, Stanford University in
California) has done is flyering for administrative offices. For instance,
during reunion weekend, the Undergraduate Research Office wanted to
advertise a research symposium that they were putting on, and they paid our
chapter about $350 to distribute flyers for it. Just a hint, our advisor
(who works in the URO office) was the one who suggested this one to both
parties, so if you are looking for ideas, see if your advisors have any up
their sleeves.

Working for your administration can also be a good source of income,
especially around homecoming/reunion time. Often your Alumni Office or
Office of Development will be looking for extra help at those times, and
many have systems set up to pay groups for the help.

The last one which, although a bit sketchy, can be a lot of fun, is a
top-less car wash. This was also done by ZE (which, at the time, was about
95% female, just as a side note). Anyway, the idea is that you set up a
car wash in a convenient location (along a major road in your town works
well), and you offer to wash anyone's car for free, except for the top
(hence the top-less part). You offer to wash the top for any donation that
they would like to give. We used any donation because, when you set a
price, people typically paid that price. When you asked for a donation,
people would often give MUCH more than the price you would have
charged. Few people give less than the price you would have set.

Anyway, those are just a few of many ideas that are out there. As
Nationals is coming up, please keep the ideas coming!
