Based on recent spam trends, I have adjusted the security settings on APO-L to require any non-subscriber and new subscriber posts to come throuhg me for approval. In addition to restricting the flow of spam to all of our subscribers, this should also let me get an idea of how many legitimate posts tend to come from non-subscribers. I'm not sure how we'll handle fully enabling new subscribers for open posting, but I'll see how it goes.

To be honest, the actual volume of spam in the 7 weeks since I became APO-L moderator had been relatively minimal, but because we're coming out of a low-volume period in terms of "real" postings, it just seems like spam is turning into a high-volume problem. By my count, I think we've seen 12 pieces of spam in this time. This is about the same volume I see on my business e-mail account at Caterpillar (which also used to be relatively free of spam), and close to my daily total on my AOL account. I've also learned that for every piece of spam we see, 5 get flagged as possible spam and are blocked from being sent to the list.
All for now - we'll see how this new setting works and go forward from there. (And if the list goes silent, you'll know I goofed up the settings and will need Ellen to come back and straighten me out!!)
