Hello.
My name is Dan O’Reilly and I am with the non-profit organization Earth Day.
I am interested to know if there is someone I can contact and send more
information to about your chapter of Alpha Phi Omega participating in the
Bright Light Energy Saver Fundraiser. The Bright Lights Program involves
selling environmentally responsible light bulbs in your community, which
conserve energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the air, while
saving the buyer money on their electricity bill and raising money for your
chapter.
I am an alumni brother myself of Delta Rho - Rutgers University, and so I
believe that with Alpha Phi Omega’s strong commitment to impacting our world
in a positive way, and a national conference coming up in New Orleans, this
fundraiser may be a wonderful opportunity for your chapter to raise funds
while selling something worthwhile. I am all too aware of the constant need
of funds to implement service projects, cover overhead expenses and attend
conferences. To that end, I ask you to consider this fundraiser at your
next C.P.P.C., or anytime in planning your programs.
Unfortunately, the threat our energy usage poses to the environment is very
real. In response to the 2002 US Climate Action Report from the US Dept of
State, our Attorney General writes to President Bush:
“The report makes it clear that the question of whether global climate
change is occurring is no longer in doubt . . . It also repeatedly
acknowledges that the dominant cause of climate change is carbon dioxide
produced from the combustion of fossil fuels. Notably, the report projects
that greenhouse gas emissions will increase by 43% by 2020.”
Since the program’s inception approximately 550 organizations and schools
from all around the country have participated selling almost 24,000 bulbs.
That translates to well over 21 million pounds of carbon dioxide that was
not put into the air and over 14 million kilowatt hours of energy saved.
Through the Bright Lights Program, organizations and schools have raised
over $72,000 to support their programming.
