Brother Ken does bring up some great points, however, allow me to take a
different tack:
1) It is important that we fundraise, but we must do more than just
fundraise. We need to raise awareness of our mission and goals.
We need to determine what sources of funding we neeed, what level of funding
we need and on what level. For example, 30K per section doesn't do alot good
if it has to be redistributed elsewhere. That takes time. And chapters need
a funding level appropriate for their activities, along with the ability to
grow.
In order to do this, we need to evaluate our sources, market agressively but
not poorly to them, and then do wisely and well with those contributions. A
person making a rational economic decision, even in giving, looks at the end
results of his or her gift. If I give $50 to APO, and it gets blown on beer
or a project I find superficial, I might rethink that donation. If APO
approaches an alumni with a contribution request or a request for services -
the APO Alum expects a return on invested time, either in psychic income
(feeling good) or in accomplishment (that can be anything from helping find
a verhicle for public service to helping his kid's boy scout troop, for
example).
We also cannot forget that our simplest and most direct form of revenue is
dues. Therefore, a strong membership is not only good for chapter health,
but fiscal health as well. Further, happy APO Brothers may become happy APO
Donors after college. We need to make recent Alums feel a part of the
fraternity and allow them to grow as they change gears, have families, and
balance interests in work and life outside of APO. As many can attest to,
it's not easy to be a parent and an active alum.
