This email has been typed and retyped and now I find that it has nothing
to do with the future of APO at all.
Our National History CD was a good start, but it is not enough. Alpha
Phi Omega needs an updated, comprehensive, well-written history BOOK.
I applaud the individuals who helped put together the History CD for the
last convention. It was a BIG surprise and it is very helpful. But I
have to admit that I felt a little cheated that I did not have the
opportunity to purchase an actual book to place on my shelf, to give to
my Little as a gift, or to give to new chapters on the occasion of their
chartering.
Brothers, maybe I'm not conveying how important a history book is to the
fraternity, maybe it has something to do with the way I was brought into
the fraternity. Maybe there is no way I can convince the majority of
Brothers that this is a worthy endeavor.
But I won't believe that the talent for such a project is not there. We
are fortunate to have Brothers like Bob Barkhurst and others in our
midst. And every chapter has elders and know-it-alls.
We need to learn about Alpha Phi Omega in its proper context in history.
. .there are facets of our history that deserved to be objectively
analyzed. We need a text to refer to. It might not even give us
definitive answers, but I want Alpha Phi Omega to stand up and claim its
past.
I have questions. . .many questions. . .I'd like to know the text of the
Oath of Humility. I'd like somebody to DEFINITIVELY analyze why our
black chapters faded out in the 80's. I want good biographies of our
prominent alums. Heck, who is John Jadel? What happened to Frank Reed
Horton? What about the lives of our founders? I want to know the good
and the bad, and I think every Brother has that right.
I'm not looking for the next "In Search of Sisterhood" in terms of
commercial appeal, but I am looking for AT LEAST the same quality.
What can I do?

PS - "In Search of Sisterhood" is a history of Delta Sigma Theta, which
is available commercially.
