I totally agree with Mike Francis' statment about retention. I think that
the key to our Extension efforts is for us to keep the chapters we have.
How do we do this?
Well #1 is that we do what ever is possible to keep our chapters from dying
out.
We need to coordinate our efforts throughout the fraternity to see that the
needs of the Small chapters are being met.
I see a rising trend in the National Fraternity, when it comes to Small
Chapters, the number of them are increasing.
When I taught the "Small Chapter Survival" Workshop at National Convention
2000, we had over 100 participants who attended my workshop.
Most of them were dealing with very simmilar issues including:
1. Dealing with Social Greeks
2. Conflict between members
3. General Apathy towards participating in the chapter
4. Lack of people
5. Lack of Monetary funds
We need to focus our efforts on keeping these small chapters alive.
How do we do this?
1. We educate the active students about our National programs like CPW, and
we offer incentives for them to attend.
2. We educate our staff in dealing with these issues and encourage the
staffers to attend programs like SRW.
3. We contact our alumni/volunteer base and get them interested in helping
the Small Chapters, as advisors and or contacts.
4. The National M&E committee should provide more info/publications
directed towards small chapter survival.
Only after we have examined the needs of the current small chapters, will we
ever be able to reach our extension goals. It is great for us to target 50
schools for new chapters, but if we loose 50 of our active chapters, where
does that put us?
