I believe, as I said before, the best way to recruit high school students is
to perform service at the high schools in our areas.
I think chapters can have mentoring programs (Big Brother/Sister?) that give
high school students the chance to get a taste of college through the
experiences of the mentors. . .plenty of established orgs have established
programs that chapters could borrow from.
I have problems with "recruiting" from high schools. . .if we don't already
perform some sort of service activities for or at these high schools, I
think we look desparate if we are recruiting from that age group. If we
already have longstanding relationships with these schools, then that's
different.
I guess my ultimate feeling is that the individual chapters should decide in
what way they should be involved in extension in their area. My home
chapter hasn't been very active in extension until quite recently, and I
think that they way they are involved is probably the best way for them, but
not another chapter. They are working closely with the Interest Group at
Howard University. They wouldn't be the best choice to go into high schools
and recruit or the best chapter to participate in scouting events. But what
they do works.
