All --

In recent discussions that I have had with National and Regional officers
regarding this issue, it was determined that if a Chapter wished to specify
subjective requirements, that it was not enough to simply specify them in
the By-Laws or Rules and Procedures. A pledge should know everything that
is expected of him/her during the pledge program PRIOR to the program
starting. To have a pledge work all of the way through a semester and then
at the end, have the Chapter decide that they did not show enough
"dedication" is what lands Chapters into trouble when the pledge complains
to the Section Chair or the Region Director.

What I will be recommending to the Chapters of my Section starting in the
fall is to have each Chapter present ALL of the Requirements in writing to
the pledges and have the pledges sign a sheet in return stating that they
received the requirements and understand them. At the same time, I will
also recommend that the Chapter decide what it means to the Brothers the
definitions of said subjective requirements. This way, everyone is on the
same page, the pledges fully understand what is required of them, and that
the Chapter's right to determine membership is upheld with no surprises for
the pledges.

If you have anything specific for me to comment on, please contact me
off-list; otherwise, I am back to my normal lurking status.

Subject: [APO-L] More pledging questions

Brothers-

To those of you who replied to my earlier inquiries about what you do if
(and when) a pledge fails to meet requirements, Thank you ever so much. I
have read through all of them and then forwarded them to the committee head.

My committee has one more question for you all:

Do you have your pledging requirements written into your bylaws.

We are looking for answers as simple as a "yes" or "no" and if you choose to
share those reqirements, well thats up to you.

Thanks once again.

Paul
