Well, I'm probably not going to New Orleans (small kids tend to do that.

But, there is really only one choice for such a trip on Amtrack and that
is the Crescent Train. The schedule would be leaving NYC at 2:25 PM on
Xmas day, going down to DC about 7PM, Greensboro, NC about 1AM, Atlanta
about 9AM and then New Orleans at about 8PM that night. It stops ina lot
of other places between them check out

Return would leave NO at 7:20 AM on the 31st getting into NYC just after
2PM new years day.
Price on the train each way is $96.90 for students with the "student
advantage" (not sure how to get) and $114.00 for adult. This is for
reserve coach, you'd sleep in your seat.
There are some alternate routes listed going through Jacksonvbille &
Chicago, but both are close to 48 hours rather than 30...
