I have information about a service opportunity occurring later in May in
the Chicago area. Although this date is after most chapters in the area
have finished school for the summer, individual APO Brothers living in the
Chicago Area are invited to participate.
Learning for Life Executive of the Chicago Area Council, Boy Scouts of
America, regarding Field Days they are sponsoring May 21-24, 2002.
Learning for Life is a subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America that
sponsors programs separate from the "traditional" BSA programs such as Cub
Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Ventures. These programs are coed and often
offered as in-school programs, and do not have the membership requirements
of the traditional programs which have drawn fire from various groups in
recent years. There isn't an advancement program, but participants may
earn Eagle, Quartermaster, Ranger, or other awards by registering in a
traditional unit.
The field days will be held Tuesday May 21 and Wednesday May 22 at Thatcher
Woods Forest Preserve (Thatcher Avenue and Chicago Avenue, near west
suburbs) and Thursday May 23 and Friday May 24 at Dan Ryan Woods (87th and
Western, southwest side of Chicago). Volunteers are needed on site from
8am until about 2pm. It is not possible to work partial days.
Volunteers are needed to assist at stations for Team Building, Relay Races,
Games, Camping Skills, obstacle Course, Songs, Nature Hikes, and Arts and
Crafts.
