I was spoken to by a member of fraternity about <BR>
the 1976 agreement?<BR>
And I was like what agreement? If your talking <BR>
about the decision <BR>
the become coed that then I understand. But <BR>
they continued to <BR>
mention the agreement that all new chapters and <BR>
reactivated chapters, <BR>
the miss-stated (Gentlemen's Agreement), <BR>
happened in 1976. But <BR>
after I've investigated I've found dozens of <BR>
mis-stated comments, <BR>
leading me to believe that this idea is running <BR>
ramped. Two dates are <BR>
getting mixed up. 1986 and 1976.<BR>

In 1974, we elected to re-affirm affliate <BR>
membership for women. Because<BR>
in the Pledge Manual it stated that Phyettes <BR>
began in 1965. So we just<BR>
stated to make official authorize alternative <BR>
course for full female membership. The <BR>
resolution of full female membership failed <BR>
1974.<BR>
<BR>
In 1976, we simply changed female affiliate <BR>
membership to full <BR>
membership thereby allowing all students to <BR>
become members. It was<BR>
not an agreement, it was just stating for the <BR>
most part that<BR>
women are getting full membership, and the <BR>
pursuit of seeking Title IX exemption. This is <BR>
not even a promise. It's simply a <BR>
proclaimation. <BR>

In 1980, I was in the chartering group of Alpha <BR>
Alpha Lambda Chapter at Alcorn State <BR>
University. It was an all-male group, and was <BR>
approved for chartering my the national office. <BR>
<BR>
In 1986, The National Board created a rule. If <BR>
any chapters become inactive for any reason the <BR>
must be reactivated as coed. Also any new<BR>
chapters must be created as coed. This 1986 <BR>
rule is what some confuse as the "Gentlemen's <BR>
Agreement." But it wasn't an agreement it was <BR>
a rule created by the National Board. <BR>
<BR>
In 1998, Alpha Phi Omega reaffirmed the 1986 <BR>
ruling by a great margin. Something like 350 <BR>
something to 50 something. However, most <BR>
people felt like we were keeping a promise made <BR>
to the all male chapters, and that it was a <BR>
promise made 20 years ago, 1976. The big <BR>
statement made in 1976 was the right of<BR>
each chapter to determine its own membership.<BR>

not state that. It would be interesting to <BR>
find out what was the voting count on that <BR>

Title IX. The specific<BR>
resolutions are as follows:<BR>
<BR>
(1) Nothing in these By-Laws is intended in any <BR>
way to permit any chapter to<BR>
be in violation of laws respecting the civil <BR>
rights of any persons.<BR>

(6) Nothing in the National By-Laws or Articles <BR>
of Incorporation shall be<BR>
construed to require any chapter to accept any <BR>
student as a pledge or active<BR>
member of its chapter.<BR>

mostly reference the effort to<BR>

I'm going to a chapter that I found with a old <BR>
history book of Alpha<BR>
Phi Omega dated 1927. Where our today's history <BR>
lies on a single sheet <BR>
of paper in today's manual, this chapter has a <BR>
book on the history. <BR>
You know I have to visit. <BR>
