Brothers,
I have a proposal already submitted. And I would like to know what you t=
hink.
Since reading some of the issues raised on the BSA, I thought =
this resolution would get some interesting responses. Tell me what =
you think!
Document: National Bylaws
Article: III
Section: 1
---(Presently existing......
SECTION 1. OPEN MEMBERSHIP. Membership in Alpha Phi Omega shall be open =
to all students, upon the approval of the respective collegiate =
Chapter and after fulfilling the Membership requirements prescribed by =
the National Fraternity and by that Chapter. Without gender =
implication, all initiated Members of the organization are
known nationally as Brothers of the Fraternity. =
---(Proposed...... [The addition in brackets]
SECTION 1. OPEN MEMBERSHIP. =
(1.) REQUIREMENTS. Membership in Alpha Phi Omega shall be open to =
all students, upon the approval of the respective collegiate Chapter =
and after fulfilling the Membership requirements prescribed by =
the National Fraternity and by that Chapter. [Active Membership shall =
be granted only within the context of the National Bylaws, the =
Standard Chapter Articles of Association, and the rules and regulations =
of the school involved.] =
[(2.) MEMBERSHIP SPECIFICATIONS. Because all people have the potential =
to be of service and to be leaders and friends, Active Membership is =
open to all students. Groups have the right to determine only =
their petitioning membership, and chapter status can occur within =
any group, culture, or sub culture, without regards to gender, =
race, ethnicity, physical or emotional handicap, age, marital status =
or sexual preference. Alpha Phi Omega does not require certain =
membership to exist, only that chapters do not discourage individuals =
from any form of membership within their chapter.] Without =
gender implication, all initiated members of the organization are =
known nationally as Brothers of the Fraternity. =
---(Purpose
To allow any single gender petitioning group to be formed as a =
chapter. Whether the group is all female, all male or all homesexual =
does not matter. So that at the organizational level, we can state truth=
fully
without reservations, that our "open membership" policy is =
one that does not consider gender, race, ethnicity, physical or =
emotional handicap, age, marital status or sexual preference. =
---(Rationale
This is an any-gender oriented membership policy resolution. This is =
in regards to our organization using the phrase "open membership" Be =
it, as it should be. A policy as this, should not be a policy that is =
one that places restrictions on the membership content. There should =
never be a quota, of males or of females, required to be a chapter. As =
it stands now, there is no quota for the establishment of a =
petitioning group. So if that same petitioning group, has done =
everything it needs to do as a group to become a chapter then it =
should be allow to be created or re-activate through normal processes =
without creative extentions to the existence of the applying =
group's petitioning status. Any group of individuals that displays =
the capablity of leadership, the dedication to service, the values =
of honesty and friendship, could only add to the luster of what =
Alpha Phi Omega is today. This way the policy will enhance Alpha
Phi Omega, it will become a policy that will allow growth to continue.
