Dear Brothers -
From July 23-29, I will be riding my bike (bicycle, not motorcycle)
across the great state of Iowa as part of an event known as RAGBRAI,
the (Des Moines) Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa --
pronounced "rag-bry". For seven days, it'll be just me, my bike and
about 10,000 other fun-loving folks getting baked in the sun, cursing
the hills (Iowa is not flat!!), the wind and probably some rain as
we make our way 490 miles from the Missouri River to the Mississippi.
Now that you've heard more than you wanted to know about my vacation,
you might wonder what this has to do with Alpha Phi Omega, right?
Keep yer spandex on, I'm getting to that!
On Wednesday, July 26, our expected mileage from Ankeny to Knoxville
is around 75 miles. (Actually, it's more like 77, but what's a mile
or two between brothers?) I will be dedicating this day's ride to
Alpha Phi Omega, and as such will be donning an APO t-shirt and telling
people about who we are and what we do. Luckily, my bike is already
blue, so it'll fit the color scheme!
Now here's where you can come in on this little event:
(1) Although RAGBRAI is not and never has been a fund raiser, I will
gladly accept any sponsorships for the day. I would be happy to
accept flat donations or pledges based on how many miles I actually
ride that day - say 10 cents a mile, or more if you're really into
this idea! All proceeds will be donated to the National Fraternity
in support of our leadership development programs.
(2) I have APO t-shirts a-plenty, but I'd be interested in wearing
one from your chapter, section or region if you have one laying around
that you think would look cool (particularly from behind) and generate
questions or positive interest in APO. I'll even find a way to wear
more than one shirt during the day if I get more than one.
(3) If you happen to be in Iowa that week, drop by to see the ride
somewhere along the route. It's a pretty impressive sight to see
10,000 bikes move through a little town with a population of 5,000,
500, 50 or only 5! Can't say I'll see *you*, but I'll appreciate
the thought, particularly if you do so on Wednesday. (If you really
want to find me, I camp with Rainbow Cyclists and you can find us
via the main message board each night.)
(4) Catch RAGBRAI on the web:
http://DesMoinesRegister.com/extras/ragbrai/
http://www.RAGBRAI.org/
And if all else fails, just take the time to get out on a bike in
the country this summer if only to see the sights at a slightly
slower pace and smell some real, fresh air!
If you're interested in sending a donation or a shirt, send it with
a note to:
Charlie Zimmerman
1301 Westminster Dr.
Washington, IL 61571
Note: Shirts must be received by July 20 to ensure that they'll get
packed for the ride!
If you'd like to make a pledge based on my mileage for the day,
please send me an e-mail to let me know what it will be, and I'll
send you the final total once I'm back.
Fraternally,
Charlie Z
