Hostels are an excellent and affordable place to stay in many major cities,
although I can't speak to Chicago specifically, they are usually in the $15-25
range, and some have private and semi-private room (or if you're with a
group, you may be able to fill a room with just your friends...).
The major world hosteling organization is Hostelling International, of
which American Youth Hostels (AYH) is a member. Check out their web
pages at http://www.hiayh.org/ for locations and details. There are
some other smaller hostel organization and private hostels as well, do
a web search.
