Dear Brothers:

Just a few reminders for all Alpha Phi Omega brothers on some very =
special
service opportunities this week and for the rest of the year.

As many of you are aware =97 this is National Volunteer Week and this =
is also
a great opportunity to showcase your chapter's service program with a
service project this week or this weekend. Many local media outlets, =
both
print and broadcast, will be looking for service projects and other
volunteer activities all week long. Make a phone call to your local =
paper,
campus PR officer or local radio and TV stations and let them know what =
your
chapter might be doing this week as the chances of getting media =
attention
this week is enhanced greatly.

On Saturday, we will have the second of our special 75th Anniversary =
Service
Days in recognition of National Youth Service Day. Those chapters who
report doing a youth service project will receive a special certificate =
from
the National Service Committee.

Also, chapters who would like to publicize their Youth Service Day =
projects
can do so by sending in a short report to our national service partner,
Youth Service America, at www.servenet.org --- this could lead to =
possible
national publicity for your chapter, campus and National Fraternity
highlighting the best youth service projects in the nation.

Our next special 75th Anniversary Service Day will be during National
Service Week on a day yet to be announced. Watch for special =
announcements
on apo-l or on the apo.org web site or in the mailings sent to your
chapter.

********

CHAPTERS or brothers who wish to nominate a brother for a President's
Student Service Award may do so if the brother meets the following =
criteria:

* The brother must be 25 years of age or younger.

* The brother must have performed at 100 hours of service since April =
1,
1999.

If your nominee meets these requirements, simply go to the President's
Student Service Award web site at www.student-service-awards.org and
download an application and an order form for the pin and certificate.
There is a $2 fee and a shipping/handling fee of a minimum of $1.50
(depending on the number of awards ordered). There are also options =
for
rush orders (at a premium price). It's that easy.

Please note, this is handled through our national partner, the =
President's
Student Service Awards program and not by the APO National Office. We
should have a link to the President's Student Service Awards site by =
the end
of this week from the apo.org site.

In the application, please note "Alpha Phi Omega" as the organization =
so
that we can track the number of participants and service hours being
reported. We believe that there are many APO brothers who are eligible =
for
this award and we are looking forward to a great response.

******

AS WE START to wind down this academic year, don't forget to send the
National Office any service reports of great projects and PHOTOS that =
can be
used in upcoming editions of the Torch and Trefoil. Believe it or not, =
our
Executive Director/Editor Patrick Burke looks like the Maytag repair =
guy
because he is short on some great chapter doings and/or photos to fill =
those
pages of the Torch and Trefoil........ So, if your chapter hasn't =
graced the
pages of the T&T in many moons, perhaps this might be a great =
opportunity to
get some recognition of some of the great things you and your brothers =
are
doing on your campus or community.

*******

BEFORE YOU LEAVE for the summer, please try and update your chapter's =
web
site so that potential members or interested brothers can find out how =
to
get in touch with members of your chapter over the summer or next fall.
This is also a great place to leave some info on past projects or maybe
include photos on your web site of past chapter activities and service
projects. Who knows? It could lead to potential service opportunities =
next
fall or maybe inform a future member. If there is anything the =
National
Service/Communication Committee or myself can do to assist your =
chapter,
please let us know.

******

BY THE WAY, I would like to take this opportunity to say that I had a =
great
time at the Section 90 and Section 67 Conferences which I attended last
month. The brothers at Penn State and Louisville did fantastic jobs and =
I
wanted to give them my thanks for doing fine jobs. I will be at the =
Section
56/59 Conference at the University of Dayton this weekend.

******

FINALLY,

Don't forget to report your 75 for the 75th project to the National =
Office.
There are plenty of ways to come up with a 75 combination and remember =
that
the key element is having fun. We are looking forward to hearing about =
the
multitude of ways to celebrate our 75th Anniversary at the National
Convention, so don't be left out. Do something today, Saturday (75th
Anniversary Service Day) or before the end of the school year. =
Remember,
there are only 259 more days until the 2000 National Convention starts =
in
Philadelphia.  =20

Have a great week and thanks for all you do to make Alpha Phi Omega, =
our
beloved fraternity, the best service organization on the planet. Your
efforts are making Frank Reed Horton's dream a reality.

Yours in Service,

Ed Richter
