Unless you've been hiding under a rock these past few days, I'm sure you've
heard all about Floyd and the damage it is capable of doing. The 8:00pm
advisory has Floyd with sustained winds of 140 mph and gusts to 165. At its
widest point Floyd is nearly 600 miles across. The eye of the storm is
expected to approach the Florida coast to within 50 miles, stay along the
southeastern coast, and make landfall between Charleston and Myrtle Beach in
South Carolina early Thursday. At that point the entire state of South
Carolina, most of Georgia east of a line from Athens to Valdosta, and an
area from Charlotte to Raleigh to the coast of North Carolina will be
subject to winds from 40-140 mph. The storm surge on the South Carolina
coast is expected to be at least 15 feet above normal tide. At least 2
million people are being evacuated from the coast of the southeastern U.S.
For those of us here in South Carolina, this is a cruel irony. The last
time the Region IV Conference was held in this state, Hurricane Hugo decided
to visit and leveled Charleston, the site of the conference. Next Tuesday
is the 10th anniversary of Hugo's strike. Wouldn't you know, this year's
conference will be in the state capital of Columbia.
Any help that you can give, whether it be clothes, blankets, food, or even
blood, will be greatly needed. The Red Cross, United Way, and other such
agencies in your area can probably accept or direct you to places that will
accept your donations.
Yours in Leadership, Friendship, and Service,
Elliot Echlov
