Hello all:

It's not often that I post to APO-L, so let me explain who I am and what I
need first off:

My name is Jeremiah Cook and I am the key prospect at the University of
Evansville. Extension efforts at UE have been active since the Fall '99
semester but fell on their face due to various elements of my freshman
year (you know what I'm talking about, you've all been there). Some
pressure or lack thereof is being added since the university is
experiencing lower attendance numbers and it has been determined that the
need for an organization like APO is diminished due to the fact that there
are quite a few social and business-related Greek organizations on campus
already, not to mention Kappa Chi (Christian service) and all of the
related religiously influenced service organizations. I've been told by a
few administrators that there's just not the need for an organization like
APO at all. However, the university president is supposedly an APO alum
(if anyone can substantiate, please let me know) and there is a great deal
of professors that are Scoutmasters and such off campus (this is a good
thing).

I have two other prospects who are on the fence, one whom I've never
talked to face to face, and the other who is involved in Zeta Tau Alpha
actively on the Rush committee. I tentatively have a Scouting advisor
from last semester, and I'm now thinking of getting another campus advisor
since the guy who's backing us now is also in charge of Volunteer Services
and has a bunch of philanthropies and projects to manage already.

I have an active position with the University's radio station and only
have 15 hours, so I think I can handle a great deal of the workload as far
as APO goes, but I'm not sure.

As far as prospective rush, I'm not even at that stage. Still on core
group...

Here's my tentative plan of attack:
1) Recruit the rest of the core group (two or three more students and a
campus advisor)
2) Do some service projects to get into the groove.
3) Publicize, publicize, publicize.
4) To be determined.

Does anyone have ANY suggestions? I've read the CON and been at the stage
where I'm just overwhelmed at it. Do I need to actively recruit freshmen?
Or should this be more of an upperclass thing?

Please, any help anyone could give would be appreciated...apologies for
the length of this e-mail

(Oh, thanks to Randy Finder for sending us a prospect, lol)

"...Santa was a white man in need of a job, and he had no qualms about
holding little black kids in his lap. When little Henry West (a white
boy) crawled into his lap, Santa stared at him, looked at the other
children (who were black), then back at Henry, and whispered in his ear,
'Boy, you white or colored?' The nursery school teacher stood by,
listening. Henry answered, 'I want a bicycle.'"
