I did the winging thing my first semester as VP-Membership. Bad, bad,
bad results (7 actives). I went back and planned a formal rushing and
pledging program the next semester and activated 35)
Some observations:
- On some campuses, plastering the place with flyers will get you a
great turnout. (This was true on my alma mater's campus). On
others, it'll be greeted with someone else stapling their flyer
over yours. And if it does survive long enough to make contact
with student eyeballs, they will probably just greet it with a
yawn unless it says, in BIG BOLD LETTERS, "FREE FOOD!!"
- Rush/Informational Meetings must be well-planned. Generally I've
found it's best to lead with the best public speaker, even if that
isn't a member of the exec board. Exec members are sometimes the
most competent to do their jobs, but may not be good at public
speaking.
- Obtain the "Survival Guide for Small Chapters". There's lots of
good info in here that I found valuable.
