Kelly--

We have never had a woman serve as VP, in fact none has ever been nominated
by the delegates of a convention. Prior to 1986, we did have women serve as
National Committee Chairs, but none were elected by the Fraternity.

In 1986, I had the honor of nominating Brother Kay Hairgrove (now Krenek) to
be the first woman elected by the delegates of the convention to serve as a
Member-At-Large to the Board-- today we call them Program Directors. Upon
election, Kay was assigned the Chair of the National Service Comittee, where
she served with great distinction. For her many and varied contributions, Kay
was awarded the National Distinguished Service Key last year in Minneapolis.

Since then, Brother Betsy Ullrich served as National Leadership Development
Chair and Brother mrn Tomusiak as National Service Chair. Note Betsy is also
a National DSK recipient. Of course, today we have Brothers Terri Sheets,
Maggie Katz and several women as RDs serving the Fraternity-- and they are
following a list of distinguished and honorable predecessors.

While I am certain that the talented pool of women will likely produce a
National VP and President soon -- I am confident that the women who serve the
active members do so out of a sincere desire to advance the programs of the
Fraternity they love -- just as the men do, and in no case has a woman run on
a platform of simply seeking to be a pioneer/barrier-breaker.

We are truly fortunate to have such a depth and breadth of willing and
capable leaders -- no doubt due to our emphasis on Leadership Development as
an organization. So, as is usually the case, the question is not "if" we'll
get there, but "when" we'll get there. My guess is very soon!!!
