A good pledge program needs to be fun, but also maintain its
seriousness
when it is time for the formal ceremonies. You should include as many
unity building activities in your pledgeship as possible for instance:
you may want to have the pledges create, plan, and organize a service
project of their own and also maybe a fellowship or two on their own.
This well help you evaluate whether or not they are right for being
brothers and or future officers in the chapter.
As far as service hours go, some chapters requires as much as 50
service hours a quarter/semester for their pledges, but most require
anywhere from 10-30 hours. Some chapters don't require service hours
at all. Your requirement should be based on what your chapter
decides, but make sure that it is not over the number of hours that
your brothers are required to do, because that would be wrong.
Make sure that the pledges are having fun with there pledgeship,
because if they are not, then they might be on the road to leaving the
pledge class.
Finally, Do not isolate the brotherhood from the pledges, by telling
stories about last year, or using nicknames, or inside jokes. The
pledges will probably not understand and it will just create confusion
for them.
Hope this helps.
