Our chapter has chartered an Explorer Post for about 12 years, and
more recently converted to a Venturing Crew. A majority of the
chapter members are also registered as Venturers for those under
21 and as advisors for those over 21. This has been a very
positive advantage for the chapter in that the relationship with
the Scout District and Council have been very close and productive.
The Chapter/Venturing Crew sponsors a Merit Badge University each
semester for the District with over 300 Scouts participating, and
they provide concessions at Scout Show which also is a Chapter
and Crew fundraiser; and they also provide the full operational staff
for the Klondike Derby each year. Our Council Program Director is
an APO alum and so welcomes and encourages all the chapters in
our Section to participate in camp service projects, and offers
the use of the camp facilities whenever the chapters wish to
participate. Chapter members are also recruited for Summer
Camp Staff positions and High Adventure Base positions
where College students are ideally suited to provide leadership.
Some of the projects APO does at camp have been
named in honor of APO such as the campfire Arena and the
family camp. Our volunteer Council Camping Committee chair is
also an APO alum and Chapter advisor, and similarly encourages
such participation.
By sponsoring a Venturing Crew, our chapter is primarily insured
by the BSA General Liability insurance policy not only at Scouting events,
but for any chapter activity. We file a BSA tour permit for
various chapter activities where we are traveling outside the
city limits or whenever we are
working with other groups or sponsoring activities for other
groups on campus where liablity insurance is required. The Council
provides a certificate of insurance for up to $1 million which
protects the University and the organizations that we do
service projects for. The certificate is general and good for
all activities during a calendar year; and it is renewed upon
expiration. We would not be able to conduct many of our activities
without this insurance coverage which is often required either by
the University or by the organizations for which we provide
service. It is of course essential that the chapter complies with
the BSA risk management policies and procedures whenever any
official chapter/crew activities are conducted. These are
listed in the "Guide to Safe Scouting" publication available
at Council and District offices.
Charter and membership fees for the Venturing Crew are included in
the annual budget and are obtained through fundraisers
noted above in connection with Scouting activities and
other projects, thus do not cost individual members anything.
This amounts to $7 per member and a $20 annual chartering fee
which is quite inexpensive for the very large amount of
liability insurance coverage provided.
