We discussed this (not uncommon, unfortunately). If brothers who have
held the office before the immediate past officers are available, you
could create a "treasurer's advisory group" for example. Another
possibility is to invite officers from the neighboring chapter over to
bond and brainstorm (not great for campus-specific planning, but good
for support and morale building). We did this at Gamma Pi. An
important aspect in this situation is that the members of the exec
support each other and work as a team (rather than focusing only on
their personal/program goals and blaming each other). Resourceful
motivated new officers have been able not only to pick up an office in
this situation but improve it and make it more attractive for others
to run for it. On the other hand, a divisive exec can sink a chapter
very quickly. In periods of low morale, having one or more officers
who have a positive, constructive outlook, a strong backbone and ego
but able to listen and respond is key to the survival and health of
the chapter. There was a big turnaround at Delta Rho this year, much
of it due to a strong president who had the respect and support of the
chapter and the officers who attended CPW last summer and implemented
many terrific ideas.
