Thanks to Delta Iota Chapter for hosting a wonderful Section 72
conference last weekend at Mercer University at Macon, Georgia. We
added a roof and cut out windows of a Habatat house for a single
mother with 5 kids, attended a variety of leadership workshops and had
a wonderful banquet at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. Also,
congratulations to outgoing Chair Judith Cunningham and incoming Chair
Jeff White.

Here are some notes from the Officer Transition Workshop Jeff, Dave
O'Leary and I co-presented which you may find useful.

Summary:

Officer transition can help chapters build on their previous goals and
reduce the learning curve new officers face at the beginning of their
term. One of the most important aspects of developing a new executive
committee is to establish good communication and teamwork between the
new officers and between the exec committee and the rest of the
chapter to carry out a strong program.

The participants came up with the following ideas for activites which
may comprise different types of officer transitions:

at WEEKEND EXECUTIVE RETREAT after elections
1. one-on-one old/new officer pairing for discussion
2. officer goal-setting
3. Exec unity exercises - a priority
4. coordinate last year's goals with new goals
5. come up with committees
6. solicit moral support from the chapter
7. report back to chapter about retreat (especially so
potential successors can know about retreat)
8. bring duty list for all officers and decide what to
        add/change for the upcoming year

at CPPC before elections
1. Focus on assessing general state of the chapter
2. Solicit input from entire chapter
3. Candidates need to pay attention and support all offices
4. Everyone should take notes - especially each group
5. Focus on learning how chapter can work together
6. Secretary should distribute notes after CPPC
7. Conduct CPPC survey
8. Conduct a chapter-wide annonymous survey

when CHAPTER IS DISSATISFIED with current program/officers
1. Develop and Elect strong leaders
2. Hold a leadership retreat
3. Create/review officer notebooks
4. Old officers can write a transition letter
5. Encourage chapter members and pledges to attend exec meetings (open)
6. Start a mentorship program
7. Invite speakers to motivate

at ONE HOUR OFFICER TRANSITION
1. swap officer notebooks*
        - contacts
        - duties
        - what officer did that year
2. Q/A session*
3. make sure goals have been established
4. outgoing officers discussion with incoming officers
5. discuss mid-temr evaluation of officers
6. be available to the officers
7. form an advisory committee of brothers who held office in past (i.e., service council)
8. build a folder
9. brainstomr new ideas
*most important given limited time
