Dear Colleague:
We would like to personally invite you to attend the Leadership Educator's
Conference this summer (July 19-21, 1999) at the University of Maryland in
College Park.
1999 marks the 16th year that leadership educators have gathered to explore
the latest in leadership education research and practice. LEC '99 is being
convened around the theme "Leadership Across Disciplines" which we believe
captures the multi-disciplinary nature of leadership studies. Leadership
education is the purview of many people on our campuses - the student
affairs practitioner developing a leadership workshop in the residence
halls, the business faculty member teaching ethics and leadership, the
faculty of a first-year leadership program, and a career counselor
identifying experiential learning opportunities with a student. Through our
theme, LEC '99 invites us to explore how we can inform and strengthen our
own work by understanding other disciplines and by building collaborative
relationships across our campuses and communities.
Below, we provide more information about the conference. For up-to-date
information, please visit the LEC website at
http://academy.umd.edu/Events/LEC99/. We hope to see you in July.
Sincerely,
David Harrington

Conference Program Design
LEC '99 programs, keynotes, and roundtables will be related to the theme -
Leadership Across Disciplines. Within that theme, there are three tracks:
Leadership Efficacy: How do leaders learn and develop an identity as a
leader? How do students develop the skills to be effective leaders? How do
followers engage in the process of leadership?
Building Campus Coalitions: The how, why, and when of coalition building
among academic affairs, student affairs, students, alumni, corporate
partners and the community.
Teaching Leadership Today: Who are our leaders, how are they leading, where
are they leading and why? What are our best practices in working with these
students?
Programs which support these tracks will be given first consideration,
however all submissions will be considered. LEC '99 will feature
approximately 3 plenary sessions, 25 workshops, and 12 round-table
discussions. There will also be an on-going resource room.
