This is in reponse to both Scott and Unicorn...
I apologize if I was unclear in my previous posting. I was not indending
to suggest that joint sectionals are superior to separate ones...
If anyone who has been a Region VI director reads this, you may be my only
source of memories here, scout has said there haven't been any since '88.
Joint Sectionals appear to happen for three reasons.
1) One of more of the sections involved has a small enough number of
chapters that trying to rotate among the chapters in the section is not
all that useful and there aren't enough brothers at the conference to
reach critical mass for fun. (one-half :) (Example 32/33/34)
2) The sections involved were once part of the same section and while the
section split for administrative purposes there is still a feeling of
unity between the parts (56/59)
3) The sections are in the same state and while not small enough to cause
rotation to be a problem, the sections have some sense of unity. (79/80
previously, 88/89) (Sort of between 1&2)
None of these are appropriate for any of the sections in Region VI. I
don't believe that ANY of the sections in Region VI have been below 6
chapters in the last decade and a half and they are all in different
states. If any of the sections there split, I could see joint sectionals
between the sections resulting from the splits.
For Region IV, there are only two sections with a relatively small number
of chapters: 68 (Eastern TN) and 98 (Puerto Rico). (And Puerto Rico is a
bit far for a joint sectional) I could see Section 68 having or having had
a joint sectional conference with either Section 70(W TN,W KY) or Section
72(GA).
