1999 Alpha Phi Omega Youth Service Grant Recipients

=09I would like to announce the recipients of the 1999 Alpha Phi Omega You=
th
Service Grants.
=09A total of $4,227 will be distributed among the 11 chapters who were se=
lected
to receive the youth service grants ranging from $200 to $500 each. All of=
the
projects were interesting and commendable. We're already looking forward=
to
seeing the results of these project plans later in the year.
=09The program, which is funded by the Jadel Foundation, awards grants to
qualifying APO chapters to conduct a service project that relates to socia=
lly
positive programs for pre-college-age youth.
=09We would like to congratulate the following chapters as well as describ=
e
their projects and share an e-mail contact for everyone. They include:
=09Alpha Delta Omicron Chapter, West Virginia Wesleyan College, Region V; =
the
grant will help fund =93Project Scream,=94 a survey of middle and high sc=
hool
students in its community to help identify and develop programming and
creation of youth activities, programs and events in their county. For m=

=09Omega Mu Chapter, Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Region V; the gra=
nt
will allow the chapter to take a group of children from the community tha=

they have been mentoring to the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.

=09Rho Pi Chapter, University of California, San Diego, Region X; the gran=
t will
help fund a mentorship program for a local high school to work with childr=
en
from disadvantaged families having difficulty in school. For more

=09Theta Zeta Chapter, University of New Hampshire, Region I; the grant wi=
ll
fund several ongoing fun activities this year for children living in the
Dover, NH, Housing Authority. For more information, contact Stephanie Col=

=09Zeta Epsilon Chapter, Gustavus Adolphus College, Region IX; the grant w=
ill
fund the =93Twisting Together=94 to help children in grades 4-6 in St. Pet=
er, MN,
get over the destruction from their town=92s damage from a tornado last sp=
ring
through some ongoing fun activities this spring. For more information,

=09Zeta Gamma Chapter, Valparaiso University, Region VI; the grant will h=
elp
the chapter continue with =93Project Tope,=94 an annual and ongoing servic=
e
project for an area Boy Scout camp. This project has been ongoing for the =
past

=09Beta Eta Chapter, University of Missouri at Columbia, Region VIII; thi=
s
grant will help fund a local youth Olympics in the community being organiz=
ed
by the chapter. The chapter already has a previous relationship with the l=

=09Delta XI Chapter, Ball State University, Region VI; the grant will pro=
vide
funding for educational and non-violent computer software day at a local
community center in Muncie, Ind. Also, this is the second time in three y=
ears
that Delta Xi has received a youth service grant for a project at this
particular community center, which is located near a housing project with =
one
of the city=92s highest violent crime rates. For more information, contac=

=09Chi Kappa Chapter, University of North Carolina at Asheville, Region II=
I;
this grant will provide funds for =93Teamup for Success,=94 where the chap=
ter will
work with at risk children at local Boys and Girls Clubs through mentoring=
,
athletics, attendance at some college and minor league athletic events and
interacting with college athletes on the importance of an education. The

=09Beta Rho Chapter, University of Arkansas, Region VIII; this grant will=
be
used to purchase radios for the annual Scouting University that the chapte=
r
has hosted for more than seven years. The radios can be used by the chapte=

future years for this project and possibly for other projects as well. Fo=

=09Alpha Delta Rho Chapter, University of Northern Arizona, Region X; this=
grant
will be used at a local child care center at a vocational/technical high
school in the Phoenix East Valley area. In addition to helping to provide =
the
rec equipment to use on their playground, the gardening side of the projec=
t
will also help the children learn responsibility and sharing as well as le=
arn
from the experience of watching their gardens grow. The brothers will be
participating in the project which they believe will be an ongoing chapter

=09The Selection Committee and I are looking forward to evaluating many mo=
re
grant applications for the 2000 APO Youth Service Grant cycle. Have your
chapter service committee start thinking NOW about possible projects to be
proposed next fall. Applications for the 2000 APO Youth Service Grants wi=

be in one of your first chapter mailings next fall.
