People are seeming to forget that the RD is also elected by the students
and so the RD is also responsible to the students in the chapters just
like the sectional chairs. (This is also true of the national board) If
the region dislikes the mandate from the RD then they can always elect a
new RD. (I agree that a two year wait could easily be too long for some
issues)
If a regional director and a sectional chair have a disagreement, the
sectional chair still has the ability to take the matter up with the
national board of directors. The sectional chair could attend the next
board meeting and raise the issue. The problem might go on for a few
months but if it is such a major issue that it needs to go to the board,
then the time before the next board meeting will actually do the
situation some good. It will give the sectional chair and the RD some
time to think about the problem and maybe come to a solution.
I have worked with two different RD in my terms as sectional chair, and
we don't always agree on every thing, but we have always come to an
working agreement. I have actually been told THIS is the way it will
be, and ALWAYS was told why doing it another way would be in violation
of a state, federal or national law. The RD and I work together so that
the SPRIT of what the chapter was intending is satisfied but what they
are doing does not violate any state, federal, or national rules.
I would like to say the RD have a thanks less job and every regional
director that I have worked with has done a great job. Thanks Mike and
Bob.
I have only skimmed this discussion but I am only talking about major
issues that can effect APO. I can see situations were the regional
director and the sectional chair could have an disagreement and the
sectional chair lose out because the RD states this will be the way it
is. An example of this is what if the RD states that this weekend will
be your sectional conference. How would a sectional chair appeal this
type of mandate? I would hope that no RD ever makes this type of
statement a mandate and would work with a sectional chair to get an
agreeable weekend.
