the thing about holding conventions in the summer on university grounds is
that most colleges and universities have summer school, and a lot of
housing goes to the summer school students. plus a lot of schools hold
other conferences, camps, etc. i know that here at southern methodist, one
building houses summer school students, one or two others (depending on
which they're using) houses incoming orientation students, almost all of
the others house kinds for cheerleading camp, swimming camp, and all kinds
of other annoying things, which pretty much eliminates all but maybe 10%
of housing. maybe this wouldn't be as much of a problem on a campus like
UT Austin, or Penn State main campus, but i still hoestly think that at
hotel(s) and convention centers during the winter break is the best bet.
besides, you don't want to be competeing with 13-year-old cheerleaders for
facilities and housing space. they're really annoying.
