Dear Brothers,
Now that I've got your attention and have hopefully not offended anyone. I
am writing this in response to multiple amounts of mail I have received on
APO-L in regards to the National Convention. MinneAPOlis was my first
experience with a National Convention of any sort. I was a voting delegate
and also served on the Finance and Operations Committee. Luckily the
committee that I served on finished our legislation rather quickly. I do
however have a few comments to make about: 1) alumni submitting legislation,
2) voted down legislation not being allowed back, & 3) an earlier start time.
1) Alumni submitting legislation--I have no problem with alumni submitting
legislation afterall they do have more experience than most active brothers.
Alumni should also have more experience of how National's Legislation is
worded and should be presented. I had no clue until this year how it worked.
Having a chapter's support would be a plus just in case the alumni member is
not available for subpeona, the committee issuing the subpeona could then
subpeona a member from the supporting chapter.
2) Voted down legislation not being allowed back--This is a tough one. I
see both sides of this debate and have a suggestion. Instead of saying that
legislation not be allowed back at the next convention, why not limit the time
it is discussed on the legislative floor if it even makes it back to the
floor? If we were to say that a piece of legislation that was voted down at
one convention could not be brought up at a convention in the future, I don't
think women would be allowed in the fraternity.....but I could be wrong.
Also, not allowing legislation back would be almost the same as "postponing
indefinitely" or "killing it". Right?
3) An earlier start time--An earlier start time would make it difficult for
some people travelling longer distances and not opting to fly to attend the
convention without having to leave their respective homes on December 25th or
before. Also, if we were to extend the convention to the 31st does that mean
the closing banquet would be the night of the 31st? If so, we would have to
check out future hotels for what happened in MinneAPOlis about having to be 21
to stay that night. But then again, since this was my first convention I do
not know if this has ever happened before.
Just my few cents worth considering I've been on the list for a while and
haven't really posted anything. I hope you all did have an extremely safe
trip back from the Convention and are ready for a great Spring Rush!!!!!!
Have a great one!!!
