>>Further, I would suggest that all chapters should find a way to support
delegates financially during this time. At one point, we had a fund rasier set
aside for our nationals delegates at Epsilon Sigma. It worked quite well<<
I was surprised when I was chair for Section 91 that the chapters did not feel
that (at that time 3 to 4 years ago {So as we know that things can change 180
degrees in 3 years}). It is neccessarily the chapter's responsibility to fund
delegates for conventions and conferences. (Again if this thinking has
changed in the Section 91 chapters I applaud you and appologize). I have
always felt that chapters should find some way to cover part of the cost of
conventions and conferences. When I was president of the Delta Upsilon
Chapter at ESU of PA, we set aside enough money from our annual budget to send
4 Brothers to the Region I and II conference that year completely paid for.
The only thing that we needed to come up with were gas, tolls, and some meals.
In addition we always placed money in the national convention line of our
budget.
It is important to make sure that chapters get people to conferences and
conventions... And we all know that not everyone personally has a free-flowing
cash fund while they are in college... money is a consideration and when
conferences and conventions are planned the planner try to keep that in
mind... and try to keep costs down.
I would challenge chapters that do not include conferences and conventions
into their budget to find a way to do so. Even the chapters with the smallest
operating budget can still set aside a couple of dollars to get people to
conferences. Also check out the Student Activities Offices on your campus.
Some of these offices have money set aside that few students know about to
help off-set the costs of getting students to leadership development
conferences. You might be surprised what resources are available to you.
Just my two cents...
