Brothers--
This showed up in my mailbox today, and I thought you would all be interested
in hearing a little of what's
going on with our brods and sis's on the other side of the Pacific. If you've
got any questions, I'd recommend directing
them to Mel (his email is at the bottom). I'd also like to encourage anyone
whose got the means to get to the APO-Philippines Convention in May! Let's show
them a good turn out from our cousins on this side of the Pacific!

Hi, Brods and Sis
Over the weekend, I telephoned Brod Butch Binuya, Brod Martin Alcantara, and Sis
Tata Humoc of the Alpha Phi Omega National Office. Bits of information:
* The National Office is still located on the second floor of V.V. Soliven
Complex, EDSA, San Juan, Metropolitan Manila. If you call after 1:00 in the
afternoon, Philippine time, you'd have a good chance of speaking with Martin of
Delta Eta, Jose Rizal College. The number to call is 632 724-0808. Martin is
most helpful and accommodating.
* The National Office has had problems with the computer that needs to be
updated. That's why nobody has been able to read messages mailed to
apophil@pworld.net.ph, a service provided by Brod Rey Canlas. Rey told us close
to 500 messages have yet to be read since the computer breakdown. Tata, of Beta
Theta at University of Southern Mindanao, Kabacan, North Cotabato, promised to
send us an alternative e-mail address.
* The executive committee is holding a meeting this Friday, January 15, 1999,
starting at 7:00 p.m. We hope to hear from Brod Marnie Alquiza, national
president, as plans are finalized for the May 7-9 convention in Davao City.
Quick questions: Who's the convention chair, and what are his or her mailing and
e-mail addresses as well as telephone numbers?
* As of today, a number of brods and sis from North America have expressed
interest in attending the Philippine convention:
1. Brod Jack McKenzie, new APO-USA national president
2. Brod John Wetherington, new APO-USA national vice president
3. Brod Dave Emery, new APO-USA leadership development director
4. Brod Bobby Hainline, new APO-USA finance and operations director
5. Sis Teri Sheets, new planning and advancement director
6. Brod Allen Wong, new international relations director
7. Brod Mike Nathan, re-elected Region IV director
8. Sis Tanya Refshauge, re-elected Region IX director
9. Sis Beth Tom, new Region X director (California, Hawaii, Arizona, Nevada,
Utah, Northern Marianas, and US Pacific territories)
10. Brod John Grossi, Section 94 chair and international relations committee
member
11. Brod Tony Ploughe, ICAPO historian
12. Brod Gene Licauco, APOANA president
13. Brod Ben Castro, APOACNA medical-dental coordinator
14. Brod Vic Aquino, APO-AA Montreal president
15. Brod Mel S Gonzales Jr., member, APO-USA international relations committee
and 75th anniversary committee
Perhaps Brod Dave Corning, the director of the newly created Region XI for the
Pacific Northwest (Alaska, Washington, Idaho, and Montana), might consider going
as well. After all, Davao City is in the counterpart Region XI of
APO-Philippines.
* The latest chapter name awarded is Kappa Omicron, the 255th chapter. Of those,
104 have sorority chapters. Say, did you know a charter may now be granted to a
new school by a petition of 15 or more students regardless of gender; that is,
15 fraternity members or 15 sorority members -- but not combined brods and
sis -- may seek recognition?
* The National Office has approved a total of 92 alumni associations around the
world. Also, some 12 Filipino members in England are preparing a formal petition
for an alumni association on the British Isles.
* A constitutional convention was held on November 27-29, 1998. The con-con was
headed by Sis Fiscal Gigi Sacay. Major changes are expected to be proposed. A
scenario: The collegiate chapters and alumni associations might become
autonomous of each other with their own respective national presidents; a
foundation would provide oversight. These proposals might make for a very
dynamic and synergetic convention in Mindanao.
* March 2, 1999, is the big event date in the Philippines before the May 7-9
convention. Plans are under way to hold the 49th foundation anniversary at Camp
Crame in Quezon City, Metro Manila. A dinner-dance and the showing of a
full-length documentary on video cassette assessing the 20-year progress of
APO-Philippines are two major items on the schedule. Camp Crame is the site of
the 1986 Philippine bloodless revolution that ended the Marcos rule. Here's to
history in the making for APO.
