I've been watching this discussion for the past couple days, and just have a
couple thoughts I'd like to throw out:
1) A dedicated line does not necessarily mean a T1, or even a DSL line.
Streamed video can be transmitted *and* received at 56k. Granted, it's not
the best, but it can be done. We'd just have to keep an eye on update times
-- mmaybe update it ever 5 minutes or so, instead of a true "live" feed.
2) *Some* hotels, especially in "wired" cities, actually offer direct Internet
access for their business customers. I have no idea what prices are, or how
precisely it works, but perhaps those working on the details of the 2000
convention could keep this in mind as a potential bargaining factor in their
negotiations with the hotel.
3) I wouldn't discount the "free advertising" bid so quickly -- we'd just need
to reassure (as best as possible) the hotel that what we'd be sending out
would be pictures of the legislative floor of our convention. That's not
generally where the more strange and interesting events occur.
4) This is something that really needs to be delved into *very* deeply. We've
got a lot of different issues here. Would we want a true "live" feed? Are we
going to want sound? Who's going to be in charge of ensuring that everything
is up and running? Should this even be a consideration? These are all very
important issues, and I don't really know who other than the Convention
Committee is best suited to hash these out.
To borrow from Dennis Miller, "That's just my opinion -- I could be wrong."
