Nightcrawlers: Happy New Year's Eve means planning ahead

Tim Harlow and Eric Hanson / Star Tribune

All dressed up and wondering what to do to
ring in 1999? New Year's Eve revelry will
abound in the Twin Cities Dec. 31, and in
most cases you won't need reservations; just
show up and party.

Here is a sampler of what's on tap.

Things start early and go late at A
Capital New Year in downtown St. Paul.
Local musicians Martin Zellar, Trailer
Trash, Debbie Duncan, Cynthia (Funkytown)
Johnson and Dennis Spears are among the 125
acts that will keep the alcohol-free
celebration grooving from 4 p.m. to
midnight. In its third year, the party also includes
performances by the Borrowed Bones Dance
theater and the Theater Mu Daiko Drums,
plus a youth circus, clown shows, hay rides
and admission to the Science Museum. The
shebang ends with fireworks. Various venues
in downtown St. Paul. $6 in advance,
$8 at the event. 651-222-1000, category
1999.

Mostly music

A few radio stations will hold parties
featuring rock, blues and jazz by some of the
area's best-known acts. The KQRS "Keep on
Rockin' in the New Year"
party includes roots rockers the Honeydogs,
plus Indigenous and Charlie's Cafe. Doors
open 7:30 p.m., music starts 8:30 p.m. Grand
Ballroom, Radisson South, 7800
Normandale Blvd., Bloomington. Must be 21 or
older. $19.92-$25. 651-989-5151.
Room packages also available; call
612-835-7800.

Cities 97's "Minnesota New Year's Eve
Party" ups the ante with seven
bands in two rooms at the downtown
Minneapolis' Hyatt Regency. Tina & the B-Side
Movement performs with Johnny Clueless, 3
Minute Hero and Sarcastic Jack in the
Nicollet Ballroom. The Hot Head Swing Band's
New Orleans-style swing jazz headlines
another show in the Exhibition Hall -- aptly
renamed the "Vegas Lounge" for the night --
featuring retro-lounge acts the Dustbunnies
and Vic Volare. Doors open 7:30 p.m.,
music starts 8 p.m., 1300 Nicollet Mall.
Must be 21 or older. $19.97-$25.
651-989-5151. Room packages available; call
612-370-1234.

The Zone 105 Big Swing New Year will
transport revelers back to the
pre-Elvis days, when some of the music was
called Jump. The Atomic Fireballs will play
tunes including "Caviar & Chitlins" and
"Swing Sweet Pussycat." The eight-piece band
and guests Honk, Wail & Moan get the
festivities going at 7 p.m. Minneapolis
Convention Center, 1301 2nd Av. S. $25.
651-989-5151.

Christian music fans may opt for the
Northwestern New Year.
Proceeds from this 7 p.m. concert featuring
Susan Ashton, Geoff Moore, Aaron Jeffrey,
Cheri Keggy and KARE-TV anchor Diana Pierce
will go to Compassion International,
which provides food, clothes and medical
assistance to children in Third World nations.
Roy Wilkins Auditorium, RiverCentre, 175 W.
Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul. $20-$25.
651-989-5151.

The Minnesota Orchestra's annual New
Year's Eve Gala showcases
conductor Michael Krajewski and violinist
Shunsuke Sato in a program of Viennese
waltzes and Broadway show tunes. A dance
party follows. 8 p.m., Orchestra Hall, 11th
St. and Nicollet Mall, Mpls. $20.75-$37.75.

E. 38th St., Minneapolis. $10. 612-825-3668.

Skate out the old

If you're not fleet on your feet, you

Year's Eve Party at Roller
