PHILADELPHIA RECOMMENDED AS SITE OF 2000 REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION
WASHINGTON (November 5) - The Republican
National Committee's convention site selection
committee today recommended that the 2000
Republican National Convention be held in
Philadelphia.
Republican National Committee Chairman Jim
Nicholson said, The first president of the next
millenium will be nominated in the cradle of
liberty during the 2000 Republican Convention in
Philadelphia. The Liberty Bell and Independence
Hall will make a compelling backdrop for
nominating a president and promoting our party's
vision for a better America in the 21st Century.
RNC Site Selection Committee Chairman Jan
Larimer said, "After a thorough search, we found
Philadelphia is the city with the best combination
of what we need for an outstanding convention,
including great facilities, superior hotel
accommodations, strong financing and countless
activities for our delegates and their families."
Philadelphia 2000 Executive Director Karen
Buchholz said "We are honored and thrilled to
have this opportunity to host the GOP's first
convention of the new millenium in Philadelphia.
This is a great day for the entire Philadelphia
region and we're looking forward to working with
the RNC on a terrific convention."
"This was a challenging decision to make," Larimer
continued. "We started with a field of contenders
that was more competitive than we have ever
seen. I want to thank city leaders in Indianapolis,
New Orleans, New York, San Antonio, Charlotte,
Chicago, and Minneapolis for pursuing the
convention and the opportunities it offers. These
cities each have attributes that appealed to us,
and I fully expect to see a Republican convention
in these cities in the future."
Party and city officials will now negotiate a
contractual agreement for the convention, and
then present Philadelphia to the 165 members of
the RNC who will vote to officially designate the
site of the next convention. The vote will take
place at the RNC's annual winter meeting in
January 1999, held next year in Washington, D.C.
Philadelphia was selected from a field of five
finalists from an original field of eight after a
comprehensive six-month review. Members of the
site selection committee visited all cities that
submitted bids and then returned to the five
finalists for a second look. The other finalists
were Indianapolis, New Orleans, New York, New
Orleans, and San Antonio.
The 2000 convention will take place during the
week of Saturday, July 29 to Friday, August 4,
2000; the specific dates during that week for the
convention sessions have not yet been
announced. The site selection committee has
nine members: Chairman Jan Larimer, who was
appointed by RNC Chairman Jim Nicholson on
December 5, 1997; and eight elected members -
one woman and one man chosen from each of the
RNC's four national political regions on January
17, 1998.
