Brothers,
I've read, with some interest, the debate surrounding the matter of =
chapter's having houses. I'll give you my opinions, and please keep in =
mind that's all they are.
First, I ask you to consider this: is having a house necessary for our =
chapter's, and, if so, in what way is it necessary?
* If the response is that it promotes visibility, why can't that =
chapter's programs of leadership, friendship, and service promote that =
visibility? Oh, well, I suppose with a house you could have a sign with =
letters, right? Why can't you have a chapter *office* to accomplish =
that, as well as help the chapter maintain visibility (either by running =
some campus program like a lost and found or some other program.)
Second, consider liability: the proposals in this round of amendments, =
as I recall, do *not* address or attempt to do so, matters of liability =
and risk. At the very least, I think that any Brother who reasonably =
belives chapter's should have houses would ahve made some attempt, if at =
least only in the rationale, to address it. Whether you like to hear =
about risk management or not, the failure to consider and address risk =
and liability issues is a good way to start down the road to trouble.
I have to agree with Amy Masters - at this point, based on what I've =
read, I'm not convinced that the benefits of allowing houses outweighs =
potential risks. Perhaps a more in-depth study of financing and =
liability would be a good place to start; perhaps the originators of =
this proposal might consider a resolution to require the president to =
form a committee to investigate the impact of allowing houses. I'm not =
in favor of chapter's having houses, and I'm not certain I ever will be =
(though that could change based on reasonable and responsible proposal), =
but the responsible thing to do would be to investigate these issues =
before we just change the policy.
Just my 8 cents worth.
Fraternally,
Mark Stratton
