Hello Brothers--
This past afternoon, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, several A Phi O alumni/staff
had the pleasure of honoring Mrs. Frank Reed (Helen) Horton -- widow of our
Founder Frank Reed Horton -- for all of her efforts on behalf of the
Fraternity and her support of FRH and his work.
Mrs. Horton told us about herself, FRH and their involvement in A Phi O. It's
clear that she believes deeply in our three cardinal principals and is
thrilled with how much we've grown as an organization.
We presented her with a wooden paddle in the shape of a U. S. map (lower 48)
bearing her name, A Phi O letters, Fraternity crest surrounded by small
letters spelling out "Leadership Friendship Service", December 16 (located
where Lafayette College/PA is on the map), 1925, and Region 1 (located where
the region falls on the map). Dozens of active and alumni members shared good
wishes and words of gratitude in a signature book, signed during sectional
conferences in Region 1 this past spring, to go along with the paddle.
I greatly appreciate the help of Mrs. Horton's family in preparing for the
tribute. We could not have done this without their support and are grateful
that they attended. Brother E. Ross Forman: Past National President, was also
tremendously helpful throughout the process and freely shared his knowledge.
Brother George Kober: alum of Alpha Phi and Alpha Psi Chapters, was a
wonderful partner in the creation and promotion of the paddle/book project.
The afternoon was made even more memorable for me because my Pledge Class
namesake (Fall, 1990), Brother Lorin A. Jurvis: past National President,
kindly made the trip to join us in this event and did an admirable job of
leading our discussion with Mrs. Horton.
Thanks to all mentioned above and to the other dedicated Brothers who joined
in this event in person or in spirit. Many Brothers unable to attend sent
written/email greetings, which I included in the book. I appreciate all of
your help and I know that Mrs. Horton does, too.
We concluded the afternoon by singing the Toast Song.
Here's to Alpha Phi Omega,
Carla Moran
