There has been some recent interest in knowing the source and historical
context of the so called (although incorrectly labeled) "Gentlemen's
Agreement". For those who would like some more information from someone
who was at the Convention in 1976 and was a board member at the time I
suggest you look in the APO-L archives at
http://listserv.iupui.edu/archives/apo-l.html and do a search for Bill
Rugh. He posted several messages in November 1997 on this very subject
included the resolution from the '76 Convention that is called the
"Gentlemen's Agreement" and a bit of the mood/context of the resolution.
One additional note, this is an issue that many people feel strongly
about. However, there is a great amount of lack of knowledge on this
issue and I recommend that all delegates to this next convention do their
part in learning as much as they can about it. This is why the Chapter
Operations committee from the '96 Convention established a committee to
research the issue and the possible impact a change would have. I urge
everyone to get as much information as possible before rushing into any
hasty decisions.
