I added Chad to system:administrators / bos susers lists in the SIPB
cell. I discussed with him what responsibilities/knowledge is
necessary.
It did not seem to me that there was great predecent in the past for
notifying everyone of this type of change; however, looking back at old
transactions in sipb-afsreq, I see that other administrators (Jay in
particular) were usually very good about it. Therefore, I apologize for
not sending this to sipb-afsreq and discussing it with other
administrators.
Concern has been expressed that there are too many administrators in the
cell, and that perhaps not all of them are qualified. I think that this
is a legitimate concern, and that it is something worth discussing. I
will bring it up at tonight's meeting, if it has not been discussed
before at a meeting (which it probably has, but I didn't find mention of
it in any of the minutes.)
I think that it is possible for a large group of admininstrators to work
together effectively, and I don't think it is necessary for all of them
to be "wizards." A few administrators only use their bits to do the
backups, and not for much else. Some will occasionally have to change a
quota or add a user to the pts database. A few will have to create new
volumes, move them, and peform "emergency" maintenance. A couple will
hack the server software. Some of these things require a lot of
knowledge and experience, others don't. I think that adding users to
the pts database is something which requires very little knowledge and
experience, especially if marc's perl script to do that is known.
However, I am willing to be convinced otherwise by coherent arguments.
