Not quite, Derek:

podge: Thu Mar 26 15:38:40 ~
[178]$ rkinit rosebud
Kerberos initialization (rosebud)
Password for ckclark@ATHENA.MIT.EDU:
podge: Thu Mar 26 15:41:01 ~
[179]$ rlogin rosebud
AUTHV0.1KCMDV0.1^@^@^@t^<gRV^GE-k^N^DptN>#^U /^A#^T:)/52^No^PZkX<A(X#SZ^_y(^@3.,
}^L^[o4[!^J>^XkL<^K^FSNx!mak:BMd^D4$(d=2I^F)<ckclark^@screen/9600^@
Local user '^<gRVE-k' too long, 8 characters maximum.
Connection closed.

Now, if I start up a telnet connection, stop at the login prompt, I can
use rkinit and rlogin from another shell and let the telnet connection
time out.

These workarounds are annoying, however, and history proves that it only
gets worse. I was getting xterm errors today, too. Oddly enough, this
never happens with aixterm. Maybe aixterm uses a different algorithm
for finding a pty? If so, is xterm breaking the ptys?
