In 2004, Gavriel Lipkind started experimenting with new approaches to ensem=
ble playing. These efforts gave birth to the evolution of the Lipkind Quart=
et, the Cello Concertante programs for cello and strings, as well as the Li=
pkind Plays series which he produces together with his wife, the violinist =
Anna Lipkind.

=93=A0=5B...=5D not only the reasons which brought musicians to play in an =
ensemble have changed, also the science of psycho-acoustics and instrumenta=
l knowledge have evolved.
Finally, being a musician, working as a musician, and collaborating with ot=
her musicians in a chamber group on a regular basis in the 21st century, ar=
e light-years away from the realities of the past. The traditional ways of =
working in an ensemble, which are based on these past realities, require a =
fundamental review and a radical re-thinking in order to fit the way ensemb=
les can live and sound today. =5B=85=5D
When I started researching this field, many string ensembles seemed to blin=
dly follow traditional models believing that these evolved over hundreds of=
years and (therefore) cannot be further optimised. We started by looking f=
or new ways to improve the interpretative process, and trying practical =
=93codes of conduct=94 by which an ensemble functions. =5B=85=5D
Musically speaking, we found=A0ourselves=A0confronting strange questions su=
ch as:=A0
=95 Where does continuity=A0come from? Is it the tempo / dynamic anticipat=
ion / harmonic tension? Or is there another underlying interpretative tool;=
a principle that=A0defines=A0Schubert=92s=A0time-space and allows us to 'c=
onnect the dots=92 in the listener=92s mind?
=95 Is there a principle according to which time can be shaped=A0throughou=
t the=A0movement? Or should we intuitively apply rubato /=A0rhythmicity / a=
nd tempo changes? Maybe rather just play strictly what=92s written; hoping =

on have that can be interpreted? What happens to the string?
=95 Is it important that violinists hold the instrument=A0upside down comp=
aring to cellists? What happens when we try to use an identical bow stroke =
/ diagonal / body movement?
=95 How to interpret together not just the absolute instrumental qualities=
but the rate of change between them.=A0For example a bow stroke that slows=
down in a specific way, the shape and gradual widening of a vibrato, dynam=
ic waves and=A0=93tides=94, the softness of the left hand and how gradually=
it shifts from one note to another.
=95 Why is there a=A0discrepancy between harmonic intonation and tempered =
intonation? How to apply this to the musical texture? How to develop one ki=
nd of in-tune-ness?
