(That's /news/spool on bed.) I'm going to be picking up 1GB drives
tomorrow. Would it be a good idea to pick up a drive for news
storage? We would only be using this until the news SS20 comes in.
My plan was to pick up two drives, one to put on ronald-ann for AFS
space and one to put on picayune so that it can start serving NFS
(low-volume for now, hopefully). I was planning two leave two 1GB
drives in E40, and when the first two SS20s come in, we would replace
rosebud with what was beacon, and put the two externals on the new AFS
server.
However, if we need the news spool space now, and the news server
isn't coming in until late July, it may be wise to put one disk on bed
until then.
Let me back off and explain more or less what we're planning to see
eventually: we want to add about 7GB of new disk and remove about
2.5GB of old disk, 4GB of that new disk coming from external disks and
3GB coming from the 1GB internal disks of the SS20s. We would lose
1.5GB of internal disk on rosebud, and three RZ55s (two on bed, one on
charon). This breaks down as:
AFS: Lose 1.5GB internals, add three externals
Discuss, NFS: Lose charon's RZ55, add one external
RTFM: Keep one external, add one SS20 internal
News: Keep two externals, add one SS20 internal
News-transport: Keep one external, add one SS20 internal
Note that since three of the four externals will be going on a machine
we haven't freed up yet (beacon, which will replace rosebud), the only
disk we can add permanently is one external to picayune (we can move
discuss meetings and any NFS lockers to it, in preparation for
migrating RTFM to the SS20).
My proposal, then, is to use one of the AFS externals for news spool
space until the new news server arrives. Details (some of them
arbitrary, and others subject to work which won't get some
immediately):
NOW: I pick up two external drives tomorrow. One goes on bed
(temporary), and one goes on picayune (permanent).
WHEN THE FIRST TWO SS20s ARRIVE: We name one of them yaz-pistachio,
migrate the rtfm services to it, and use the other to replace beacon.
We pick up the other two 1GB drives and put them on then-beacon, and
move all the volumes from rosebud to that machine (I think we can do
this without taking the cell down, which would be neat).
WHEN THE NEWS SS20 ARRIVES: We replace bed with the news SS20, and
move two of then-bed's external disks to new-bed. The other one gets
put on new-rosebud.
Any objections?
