I have an external DAT drive at home. It stores ~4GB per 90M tape
with compression, or 2GB without. I always have compression turned on
(it's part of the hardware), and haven't noticed any problems. It's
pretty fast, too.
It also has a nice feature, which would be good for the SIPB office:
it automatically tells you when it's time to clean the tape (every N
hours of use, I believe). When that happens, you simply insert the
cleaning tape, and wait until it ejects it.
This drive is made by Exabyte, and it cost $1000 about six months ago.
