Rosebud is sick.
Although most of the volumes I tried to restore presented no problems, I
encountered some weird behavior, and some volumes failed to restore.
The following volumes had problems:
project.dec-bsd: restores, but does not get into the VLDB
project.os2: " " " " " " " "
project.nawm: Off-line. Salvaging it does not bring it on line.
Originally restored under the name `project.ronald-ann.'
I don't know why.
project.ronald-ann: not restored. When I saw what happened with nawm,
I didn't dare.
project.bitnet: Off-line. Salvage has no effect.
project.NeXT: Off-line, but I can make mount points to it.
It seems to contain a DECstation kernel.
project.old-charon: restored it, don't know where it is now.
project.q: Off-line. Salvage has no effect. However, the volume
named project.q seems to be project.tex.
project.tex: Didn't restore. Couldn't find the end of the tape.
Strangely, this volume was in the middle of the tape,
and subsequent volumes worked fine.
I've salvaged all of rosebud, ran syncvldb and syncserv, and shut down
all of the server processes. I'm sorry if I've screwed anything up, but
I'm pretty sure that something is seriously wrong with some part of the
system, and I don't have time, inclination, or experience to find out
what.
Possible courses of action:
1) Someone who knows how to restore volumes from tape could try again.
Perhaps it doesn't like me, or maybe I forgot to do the undocumented,
half-implemented ``vos oogledyboo'' command while tracing figure-8's
with my mouse.
2) Trade in rosebud for a Maxine (jis's idea, not mine.)
3) Restore the important volumes onto ronald-ann, clean up
a bit, and wait for something wonderful to happen, say,
for Transarc to fix AFS.
